WEBSITE DESIGN FOR INDIVIDUALS AND SMALL BUSINESSES

Definitions

Blog
Short for Web Log. A public diary, sometimes allowing comments. Entries are sorted by date.
We can easily include a blog on your site. Several sites such as LiveJournal, Blogger, and WordPress allow you to have a free blog on their site, but it will look like you used a free service, and clients may associate you with other users of that service.
Content
The words and pictures that change with every page, as opposed to the skin.
CMS
Content Mangement System. A way to separate content from appearance. Not as flexible as a wiki, but good if your data fits regular patterns.
Domain Name Registration (DNR)
Buying the name of your website, such as www.onebit.ca. You must have a host account before you register a name. More information on hosting and domain name registration.
FTP
File Transfer Protocol. A protocol which allows files to be quickly copied between computers.
Host
The computer that holds your website and connects it to the internet. Domain name registration is separate. More information on hosting and domain name registration.
Mailing List
A list of email addresses, maintained on a central computer, suitable for mass mailings. Sending mail can be restricted to one person or open to all members. Most hosting packages include a mailing list program such as MailMan. Overuse will annoy your clients and is illegal in some places.
Moore's Law
The observation that power for a given cost usually doubles every eighteen months. Applies to hardware only.
POP3
A communication protocol used by all the common email clients, such as MicroSoft Outlook, ThunderBird and Eudora. Program must be installed on your home computer and configured. Useful if you have several accounts to check. Accounts with POP3 can also be checked with WebMail if you are away from home.
Search Engine Optimization
Making search engines such as Google list you higher. More information here.
Server
Another word for host.
Skin
The colours and layout of the site. The things that repeat on (almost) every page. The content is displayed in a skin. More information on skins.
Spam
Unwanted email, sent in bulk, and offering all sorts of things you don't want. It's also the brand-name of canned spiced ham, which was in every item on a menu in a Monty Python skit. Wikipedia article.
Spambot
A program that creates or distributes spam. They collect email addresses from websites and mailing lists, use contact forms, and post comments. An easy way to avoid them is to provide a picture of numbers (called a captcha) that humans can read but the spambot can't.
URL
Uniform Resource Locater. Almost the same thing as a domain name.
WebMail
A site where you can access your email from any computer. Useful if using several computers or only a few accounts to check. HotMail.com and GMail.com are WebMail sites.
Wiki
Short for "wiki wiki", Hawaiian for "quick". Originally a way for many authors to collaborate on the content of a site, some wiki software now let you limit the number of authors and/or readers. I use PmWiki.
www.canadianwebhosting.com
The company that hosts my sites. I have used them since 2003. (Note: It's .ca.
.com is one of their competitors.)
